As frontrunners In The Caribbean, One Communications And Ericsson launch 5G In Bermuda

  • Deployment of the first commercial 5G network in Bermuda and one of the first 5G deployments in the Caribbean by One Communications (part of ATNI group).
  • 100 percent of One Communications' 5G mobile network infrastructure in Bermuda is powered by Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core Network solutions.

One Communications and Ericsson have launched the first commercial 5G network in Bermuda and one of the first 5G deployments in the Caribbean, with an initial deployment covering geographically 75 percent of the island. In this first phase, the 5G network were activated in the capital city, Hamilton, followed by a gradual roll-out to the rest of the territory.

As a front runner in the Caribbean on the deployment of the fifth generation of mobile network technology, One Communications is utilizing the Ericsson Radio System and Ericsson Cloud Core products and solutions including Packet Core, Policy and Unified Data Management, promises to improve the mobile user experience and boost the digital transformation in Bermuda.

5G performance will continue to expand throughout the Island in a phased approach based on capacity and traffic requirements. The 5G non-standalone (NSA) deployment is supported by the existing infrastructure 4G network, commercially launched in 2016, allowing a faster, easier, and more efficient 5G deployment.

Ericsson estimates that almost one-in-five of all global mobile subscriptions will be 5G subscriptions by the end of 2023. The statistic is featured in the November 2023 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, which estimates that there will be 610 million new 5G subscriptions for the calendar year 2023 – a 63 percent increase on 2022. In Latin America around 28 million 5G subscriptions are expected at the end of 2023 and by the end of 2029, 5G will account for 51 percent of all mobile subscriptions in the region.
