AT&T Wireless acquires U.S. Cellular Hawaii system

Adding a critical piece to its footprint in Hawaii, AT&T Wireless (Redmond, WA) has completed the acquisition of the U.S. Cellular (Chicago, IL) wireless system on the island of Hawaii. The system on the big island encompasses a population of 141,000 and is currently operated under the U.S. Cellular trade name. The companies signed a definitive purchase agreement on March 31, 2000.

Following the announcement, U.S. Cellular will provide certain operational and support services to AT&T Wireless to facilitate the ownership transferal process. During the transition period, wireless services in Hawaii RSA 3 will continue under the U.S. Cellular name, and eventually the wireless service provider name will change to AT&T Wireless.

The transaction has met all regulatory approvals.
