Clearnet Posts Record Quarter for Digital Subscriptions

Canadian wireless communications company Clearnet Communications Inc. (Scarborough, Ontario) reported record subscriber results for the fourth quarter, ended Dec. 31, 1999.

Clearnet's Q4 subscription highlights included:

  • Digital: Clearnet added 94,623 new digital subscribers during the quarter, a company record and a 44% increase over the 65,770 new subscribers added during Q4 1998. For the 12 months ended Dec. 31, the company added 250,858 new digital subscribers, bringing its total digital subscribers to 559,331.

  • PCS: The company had 60,837 net PCS subscriber additions for the quarter, a 54% increase over 39,418 for Q4 1998. The PCS segment added 154,832 new subscribers on the year, bringing total PCS subscribers to 349,210.

  • Mike: There were 33,786 net Mike subscriber additions for Clearnet in Q4 1999, representing a 28.2% increase over 26,352 net additions for the fourth quarter of 1998. For FY 1999, the division added 96,026 subscribers, bringing the total Mike subscribers to 210,121.

  • SMR: Analogue SMR net subscribers decreased by 3,374 and 15,282 in the quarter and fiscal year, respectively, decreasing total analogue SMR subscribers to 25,250 at years end, down from 40,532 as of Dec. 31, 1998. Approximately 1,267 analogue SMR subscribers converted to the Mike network during Q4, and 5,923 converted for FY 1999.

According to George Cope, Clearnet's president and CEO, the 94,623 net digital subscriber additions in the Q4 1999 represent a record quarterly result. In addition, the 250,858 net digital subscribers for the year exceeded the high end of Clearnet's publicly stated objective of 225,000 to 250,000, Cope added.
