Following on the heels of its merger with the Wireless Data Forum (WDF), the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA)) changed its name to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association.

"Today, wireless and data are converging to create the next generation of services for the wireless consumer, and as the industry grows and changes, so must CTIA," said Tom Wheeler, CTIA president and CEO. "We have always maintained a ‘big-tent' philosophy, growing first from an exclusively cellular association to include PCS carriers, then we expanded to include supplier members. Now, we have changed our name to reflect the newest and most exciting developments in the industry. Henceforth, we are the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association."

Although the board of directors approved the name change at its October meeting, CTIA's bylaws state that CTIA member companies will need to vote on the change. Support for the name change is expected.
