Glenayre, Movil@ccess launch two-way messaging service in Mexico

Mexico's first commercial two-way wireless messaging service is active thanks to efforts by Personal Interactive Communications (PIC) company Movil@ccess (Mexico City), a subsidiary of Biper, S.A. de C.V. and Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Charlotte, NC). The first of the ReFLEX-based networks that will provide this service has been installed in the Mexico City metropolitan area. Similar networks are planned for Monterrey and Guadalajara and are scheduled for completion and activation during the fourth quarter, 2000.

The new interactive messaging system will use Glenayre's technology to enhance the power and product offerings of Biper's existing communications network. ReFLEX-based networks are high-speed wireless data networks that allow for two-way, interactive messaging. They provide broad coverage and good in-building penetration.

Movil@ccess is planning to offer its subscribers a variety of interactive wireless messaging devices, including Glenayre's @ctiveLink interactive wireless messaging module bundled with the Handspring Visor and Glenayre's AccessLink II interactive wireless messaging device.

The @ctiveLink module snaps into the springboard slot of the Visor (which uses the Palm OS), wirelessly enabling the personal information management utilities of the Visor. It provides users with always-on connectivity to the network, whether or not it is inserted in the Visor. This means the user does not have to "log on" to the network and the module is constantly receiving messages.
