Lotus to deliver instant messaging solution for mobile business professionals
Sametime Everyplace 1.0 to extend secure, real-time collaboration to wireless devices
At its annual Lotus DevCon developers' conference, IBM's Lotus Development Corp. today introduced Sametime Everyplace 1.0, the first instant messaging and online awareness software for a wide range of wireless devices, including mobile phones, PDAs and Pocket PCs.
Sametime Everyplace 1.0 is the next step in Lotus' mobile and wireless strategy to extend the collaborative power of Lotus technology to business users anytime, anywhere and on almost any device. Together with Mobile Notes and the Domino Everyplace family of servers, Lotus will enable line-of-business managers, mobile workers and traveling executives to access Lotus collaborative functionality on mobile and wireless devices, increasing productivity and efficiency. Lotus' portfolio of mobile and wireless solutions is a key part of IBM's over-arching mobile and wireless strategy.
Sametime Everyplace 1.0 supports open Internet standards and utilizes technology from Lotus Sametime, one of the industry's leading real-time collaboration platforms, enabling companies to easily incorporate mobile instant messaging into a Web Services architecture. Sametime Everyplace 1.0 advances IBM and Lotus' Web Services initiatives by providing organizations greater interoperability with other Lotus and IBM products as well as making it easier for mobile workers to collaborate.
"Now, for the first time, enterprises can have both desktop and mobile user awareness and instant messaging integrated together in a secure, reliable environment that leverages open Internet standards," said Patricia Booth, director, unified communications, Lotus Development Corp. "With Sametime Everyplace online awareness capabilities, employees can immediately determine whether their colleagues are online and choose the appropriate vehicle for instant communication - whether on a mobile phone, PDA or PC. While other companies are developing consumer-based wireless solutions, Lotus has delivered one of the first 'fit-for-business' wireless instant messaging solutions."
By adding Lotus Sametime Everyplace to an organization's existing Sametime and Web application infrastructure, Lotus customers can enrich their e-business solutions with person-to-person collaboration, knowledge discovery and online awareness functionality from almost any device. Using Java APIs and JavaBeans, developers can cost-effectively incorporate online presence awareness and instant messaging as part of any Sametime or Web services-enabled system. This will allow organizations to integrate a higher level of human interaction into enterprise processes and allow for more dynamic e-business, supply chain or customer relationship management applications.
Organizations that provide employees and customers with access to mobile workers, such as traveling sales and service personnel and executives, can save valuable time and money by instantly tapping into key resources they need to manage customer needs and bring in new business opportunities. By offering instant access to co-worker expertise and business information, organizations increase productivity and provide superior service to their customers, strategic suppliers and partners, creating competitive advantages and increased revenue opportunities.
