Source: Lucent Technologies Inc.
Lucent Technologies and Asia Cybernet Limited (ACL) today announced they will collaborate to develop mobile Internet applications for service providers in India and the Asia-Pacific region. As part of this alliance, ACL will create a wide range of customized, cost-effective local content and identify applications designed to address different market segments.

Mobile subscribers will be able to obtain information anytime, anywhere and have access to personalized services over their mobile phones. Information and services could just be a few clicks away. The Mobile Internet application solutions will focus on delivering mobile portals, wireless messaging and information applications, and location-based wireless services. All applications developed by ACL will be integrated, tested and certified in the Lucent Mobile Internet Innovation Center (MIIC) in Kuala Lumpur.

"The Lucent-ACL partnership greatly enhances Lucent's mobile Internet offer for the Asia-Pacific region-particularly in our focus markets such as Australia, India, Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan," said Tim Clark, technical director of the Lucent MIIC. "Mobile Internet revenue-generating applications are essential for operator success as a means of recouping investment in next-generation networks. By integrating Asia Cybernet Ltd's offerings into Lucent's mobile networks, we're enabling mobile operators through the region to accelerate time to revenue from the newly-launched data services."

The focus of this alliance is to quickly deliver new high-speed services that will allow wireless subscribers to exchange messages, surf the Internet and receive personalized information as today's second-generation (2G) mobile networks are enhanced through General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or migrate to third generation (3G) standards like Universal Mobile Telephone Service (UMTS) and cdma2000. GPRS, is an "always on" intermediate or 2.5-generation technology that adds high-speed Internet, e-mail and other data to existing 2G Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular networks. UMTS and cdma2000, 3G technologies, increase the speed to make connections even faster and add wireless video streaming and multimedia capabilities.

"Through this collaboration, ACL will gain knowledge and access to future wireless networks and software platforms, and better understanding of market needs," said Sanjay Goyal, CEO, ACL. "This will enable ACL to add more power to existing applications and develop new pioneering applications for advanced wireless technologies such as GPRS and 3G. As a result, operators will be able to offer their subscribers, sophisticated messaging and information applications, and therefore generate more usage for their networks."

Customized applications suited to the local environment, education level and culture are the next step in the Mobile Internet revolution. Today, with the Internet as the main enabler, applications and services will have to be highly innovative for people to pay for access, anywhere, anytime.

Lucent's relationship with Asia Cybernet aims to assist mobile service providers to rapidly realize new revenues, enhance the value of their network assets, and promote innovation to achieve higher levels of customer loyalty.

Lucent's Mobile Internet Innovation Center in Kuala Lumpur serves as a testing, integration and application development facility. It is co-located in the Petronas Towers with labs where the trials using multiple mobile technologies are conducted
