The product was designed to give wireless ISP's the ability to allocate bandwidth policies for each consumer at controlled rates starting at 64k and 128k
PacketCop was originally conceived in the fall of 1998 to address the problem of allocating bandwidth in a wireless ISP environment. The product was designed to give wireless ISP's the ability to allocate bandwidth policies for each consumer at controlled rates starting at 64k and 128k, with provisions for bursting up to the maximum capacity provided by the wireless device. Since then, the product has been continually developed and tested resulting in a fully functional prototype model in operation today.

PacketCop is a 19" rack-mount network appliance that performs high-speed bandwidth management on IP network traffic. The installation of PacketCop on existing IP-based networks requires nothing more than a Fast Ethernet crossover cable (Fast Ethernet models), which is color-coded and comes packaged with the network appliance. In Asynchronous Transfer Modem (ATM) environments, PacketCop supports transparent bridging of individual PVC's. Since PacketCop operates in a high-speed bridged configuration, no redesign of existing network topology is required.

PacketCop currently supports a variety of physical media interfaces in one of the following configurations:

  • Two (2) Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) OC3 155 MBPS ports
  • Two (2) Fast Ethernet 10/100 MBPS ports
  • One (1) T1 CSU/DSU 1.544 MBPS port, one (1) Fast Ethernet 10/100 MBPS port
Once deployed on a network, a management IP address is assigned to the unit via a laptop connection to a DB-9 serial port located on the back of the unit. If there is no laptop available for the initial serial port configuration, the unit comes preprogrammed with a known IP address for access over the network. All configuration and policy management is done through a web browser-based Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Firmware updates can be delivered to the unit via the Internet from the PacketCop Network Operations Center, which provides end customers the ability to maintain and update new PacketCop features "on-the-fly".
