Proxim Wireless Unwires City Of Malden, MA

San Jose, CA - Proxim Wireless Corporation, a global pioneer of end-to-end solutions in Wi-Fi mesh, WiMAX, MeshMAX, WLAN, and wireless backhaul and wholly owned subsidiary of Terabeam, Inc., recently announced that Malden, Massachusetts has deployed a city-wide municipal network using Proxim's WiMAX and Wi-Fi mesh product lines as the foundation. Direct Network Services (DNS), a Proxim Wireless Platinum partner and wireless solutions company that sells and services a broad range of WLAN and wireless WAN products, has assisted Malden in network design and deployment. The network currently connects all municipal offices and public safety facilities and is being expanded to deliver connectivity along key transit corridors and in commercial areas and to support the efforts of the City's mobile workforce in delivering city services. The system also provides the backbone to Malden's city-wide school video security monitoring system currently being deployed.

The City of Malden's initial goals were twofold in deploying the Proxim wireless network: first, to replace costly leased lines and their recurring fees, and second, to create a wireless infrastructure that supports both city operations and public safety. Malden and DNS chose Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 WiMAX-capable point-to-multipoint products and Proxim's ORiNOCO AP4000MR-LR high capacity, ruggedized Wi-Fi mesh access points because they support voice, video, and data while minimizing latency and working in the harshest outdoor environments.

"We chose Proxim Wireless products as the foundation of our network because our experience with the equipment has been phenomenal," said Anthony Rodrigues, Director of Information Technology, City of Malden. "DNS and our IT department 'kick the tires' aggressively on everything we buy prior to deployment, and we only go with what works. That says it all. We can rely completely on Proxim products to deliver the performance, reliability, and security we require."

The City of Malden was one of the award recipients of Proxim's 2006 Equipment Grant Program. As an award recipient, the City received approximately $50,000 worth of additional Proxim outdoor mesh equipment to use in its deployment. "We would not have applied for the Grant if we didn't already have positive, real-world experience with Proxim's products," said Rodrigues. "We would never risk our wireless network on an unknown commodity."

Located just northwest of Boston, Malden has a population of approximately 70,000 and covers 4.5 square miles. The City was recognized in 2006 by the Massachusetts High Tech Journal for its progressive stand on wireless technology.

"We are pleased to be working the City and our partner, DNS, in a collaborative effort to deliver the benefits of wireless to the citizens of Malden," said Len Gee, Vice President, Sales Americas East and Government Systems, Proxim Wireless. "Malden now serves as a showcase to other cities that share similar goals, and we are proud to have earned the City's confidence and respect."
