The ATM Adaptation Layer 2 (AAL2) signaling software solution makes it possible to transport real-time packetized voice traffic in multiple channels over the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network, enabling voice-over-ATM.

The software component is designed to accelerate the deployment of mission-critical 3G wireless and broadband network equipment for voice applications, and it meets the high-performance, interoperability, and small code size requirements of next-generation carrier-grade network products.

The software component is able to handle real-time, packetized voice traffic by mapping multiple voice channels onto the same ATM circuit. This signaling solution enables the "packing" of compressed voice packets from one or more connections (identified by channel identifiers) into a single ATM cell. The software component provides bandwidth-efficient transmission of low-rate, short, and variable packets for time-sensitive applications and provides the ability to negotiate channel identifiers for connections within its path (virtual channel).

The solution can be combined with the company's other ATM products such as ATM signaling, interface management entity (IME), and protocol layers over ATM (PLOA), to serve the 3G wireless, DSL, and voice trunking markets. The product will be available in Q3 2000.
