After launching its Wireless Web in September 1999, Sprint PCS has become the first North American wireless carrier to serve more than one million Wireless Web customers. It followed its original launch with the Sprint PCS Wireless Web for Business in August 2000.

In just over one year, the Wireless Web has evolved from delivering a selection of consumer-oriented content into a rich, interactive mobile Internet experience that appeals to consumers and business users. It includes content from more than 100 different sites.

  • Utilities: news, sports and travel
  • Transactions: shopping and financial services
  • Entertainment: games and events
  • Messaging: Instant Messaging, two-way short message service, Wireless Web mail and a wireless chat site.
Entertainment and messaging are the most recent additions to the Sprint PCS Wireless Web portfolio of services and have rapidly become some of the more popular applications.

"We've seen the number of unique customers playing games on the Wireless Web and the use of our various wireless messaging and chat services grow tremendously in just the first month since we introduced these services, reflecting the popularity of these applications in the U.S. as in other parts of the world," said Charles Levine, Sprint PCS chief operating officer.

Sprint PCS also recently announced an alliance with Palm to develop wireless CDMA solutions for Palm handhelds and Palm OS-based smartphones.

"Sprint PCS has been the fastest growing wireless carrier for nine consecutive quarters," said Levine. "Now, we are the first in the industry to reach more than one million Wireless Web users. We intend to remain the industry-leading Wireless Web provider by providing our business and consumer users with the best combination of voice and information services to enhance personal and professional productivity."
