StarHub Chooses Nokia for WCDMA System

Nokia has signed an agreement with StarHub to supply a third-generation (3G) network solution, including its advanced WCDMA 3G core and radio access network equipment. This marks the first deal in Asia for the delivery of a complete 3G System. The value of this contract is about US$300 million, and with this agreement, Nokia now has 3G partners in four countries globally.

For 3G core networks, Nokia is developing an all-IP solution that enables voice, data, and multimedia services to be supported over an end-to -end IP transport network. In support of StarHub's aim to position itself at the forefront of future mobile Internet services, Nokia will deliver its triple-mode UltraSite base stations and GPRS solution. In addition, it will provide extensive 3G system integration expertise to integrate and develop end-user applications for StarHub's operations in Singapore.

The GSM 1800 network, including switching and base stations, will also be expanded to support the carrier's growing customer base. The agreement means that Nokia remains the sole-supplier for StarHub's mobile network technologies.

"Individuals and businesses in Singapore have enthusiastically embraced mobile technology as penetration rates have reached more than 50% for handphones," said Terry Clontz, StarHub CEO. "We believe the market for broadband services will show a similar growth pattern over the next two years as new Internet Protocol (IP) based applications require more bandwidth and consumers demand higher levels of performance."
