Acquisition of Telecommunications Service Company Strengthens S&DFC's Capability in New York Market

Switch & Data Facilities Co. (SDFC), operating the nation's first network of strategically located, carrier-neutral, telco-grade shared infrastructure facilities, announced today that it has acquired ExtraNet, a privately held New York-based co-location facilities company.

Extranet operates from one of New York City's premier technology centers, located at 111 Eighth Avenue, known for its large flexible floor plates and deep back-up power systems.

"This acquisition strengthens our network and helps us to maintain our plans for growth," said Stephen B. Kelly, CEO of S&DFC. "The addition of Extranet, one of the best independent carrier-neutral co-location businesses, adds both significant infrastructure as well as talented management and technical resources to our growing company."

Michael Collado, founder and former CEO of ExtraNet, will join S&DFC as Director of New Business Development.

"I look forward to the continued growth of this marketplace as deregulation takes hold in the information age economy," said Mr. Collado. "Switch and Data Facilities Company continues to hold its ground, towering well above its competition and I'm pleased to be able to bring Extranet's former employees and expertise into the company."

S&DFC will absorb 10 employees from Extranet, bringing its base staff to approximately 100 people.

The terms of the transaction were not announced.

About Switch and Data Facilities Co.
S&DFC's international network of carrier-neutral Convergent Network Centers enable Internet and telecommunications companies such as Internet service providers (ISPs), competitive local exchange companies (CLECs), application service providers (ASPs), data storage companies and telcos to quickly and economically enter new geographic markets with the freedom of unencumbered access to the major carriers' networks.

S&DFC tenants are able to eliminate capital investments in real estate, power, back-up generators, specialized heating and air conditioning systems, and security, allowing them to focus resources on optimizing their core business. Tenants can connect directly to the telecommunication carriers of their choice and each other without interference or charges. S&DFC also provides basic technical maintenance services. Technicians are available around-the-clock to provide reboots and card swaps.

Founded in 1997, Switch & Data Facilities Company is a pioneer of the concept of an international network of carrier-neutral, co-location shared telecommunication infrastructure facilities. S&DFC intends to have 40 domestic co-location facilities operational and an additional 50 leases, both domestic and abroad, signed by the end of 2000.
