Telstra Makes Digital GSM GPRS Data Call
Australian telecommunications provider Telstra made a live-to-air digital GSM general packet radio service (GPRS) data call in Australia on its trial GPRS network, which has been provided by Ericsson. Telstra plans to launch its GPRS service commercially later this year and is currently seeking tenders for the ongoing commercial supply of GPRS equipment from Ericsson, Motorola/Cisco, Nokia, and Nortel.Edited by Ellen Jensen
In other news, Telstra reports that 80% of Australia's analog network is now closed with no plans to re-open it in those areas in spite of some confusion in the community. Instead of the analog network, Telstra is building a CDMA network, and currently has more than 1,200 CDMA base stations.
