Network operators require a data communications network (DCN) for the exclusive purpose of operating, administrating, maintaining, and provisioning (OAM&P) the lifeblood of the corporation: the communications network. This way, most operations can be remotely accommodated at the network operations center (NOC) or by field technicians. This dramatically reduces costly windshield time by avoiding false or unnecessary technician dispatches. In addition, real-time data allows for automated pre-ventive maintenance and rapid problem resolution. The result: improved quality of service (QoS), lower operational costs, and increased profits.

The OmniRemote provides access to the operations Intranet and combines alarm monitoring, re-mote control, and protocol mediation. This universal device was designed to accommodate the challenges that network operators face:

  • high cost of multiple communication circuits
  • connection to multi-vendor equipment
  • space and power constraints
  • cost and ongoing maintenance

Intranet access = reduced costs
Using an IP Intranet for network operations takes advantage of the Internet Protocol (IP) standard. A common network is shared by all equipment. The expense and waste of sometimes hundreds of telephone lines and "nailed" circuits is replaced with one efficient network. In
addition, now that most network equipment and laptops are "network-ready", their full potential can now be realized. One network reduces operational and maintenance costs (compared to hundreds of dedicated circuits) and provides better functionality.

Intranet access = improved productivity
The OmniRemote can provide a network port for the
technician's laptop. This way, the technician has secure
access to the resources afforded by the Corporation's
Intranet. Email can be checked and sent. Online equip-ment
manuals provide troubleshooting direction. Trouble
tickets and inventory updated. It's like having an office
in the field.

Intranet access = remote control
The OmniRemote provides a secure gateway between local network site equipment, the network operations center (NOC), and field locations. This way, personnel can "cut-through" to the serial craft port of equipment for control and configuration. In addition, a telnet session provides access to network ready equipment. Remote access eliminates the costly driving time of expensive
human resources.

As a provider of the OmniRemote and Network Management Systems, Badger provides a full suite of Network Management solutions for the communications operator.

Components of the OmniRemote

  • Rack-mounted shelf takes only one rack space and is powered by 20 to 60 Vdc (positive or negative)
  • Router Access Module (RAM) provides full Layer 3 Intranet routing and bridging. Also supports automatic dial back-up.
  • Serial Alarms Module (SAM) supports serial alarm monitoring, terminal cut-through to equipment (remote control), and protocol mediation. The SAM is based on Badger's Omni2021 DAD (Data Acquisition Device) software. Easily configured by a Java-based GUI. Supports 10 serial ports.
  • Bistate Analog Module (BAM) monitors discrete alarm conditions (contact closures, TTL, and volt-age measurement) and provides remote control (relay contacts). Supports 64 bistate and 12 analog inputs and 4 control outputs.

    Applications for the OmniRemote

  • Compatible with cellular, PCS, telephone, SONET, microwave radio, data, and CATV communication networks.
  • Intranet access (IP).
  • Intranet router and bridging for IP based equipment–SNMP alarms, FTP software downloads, and Telnet configuration.
  • Corporate Intranet access for the technician email, online manuals, trouble ticket input, remotely monitor other locations.
  • Control and monitor multi-vendor communications equipment–bay station, channel bank, DSU/CSU, SONET ring, PBX, C.O. switch, and radio.
  • Control and monitor the environment–power, security, tower lights, and temperature.
  • Provide protocol conversion, filtering, storing, and forwarding to a Network Management System.

    OmniRemote increases profitability

  • Helps lower customer churn by preventing major network outages.
  • Reduces operations costs by reducing the costly windshield time that still plagues an over-worked and valuable workforce.
  • The Intranet reduces the need for expensive dial-up connections.
  • Universal platform eliminates redundant equipment.
  • Conserves space and power.
  • Compatible with existing communications infrastructure.
  • Compatible with Badger's suite of Network
  • Management solutions (NetManager and OmniMaster).
