UK University Uses Mirage NAC To Gain Control Of Wireless Network

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mirage Networks, developer of patented, full-cycle Network Access Control (NAC) technology, today announced that the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom has chosen Mirage's NAC solution to gain control of its growing wireless network, one of the largest academic Wi-Fi deployments in the UK with more than 800 access points.

Like many academic institutions, the University of Birmingham has seen exponential growth in the demand for wireless services across a multitude of wireless device types. As a result, the University deployed Mirage's agentless NAC solution to address the increasing security risks and lack of visibility associated with activity on its wireless network.

"The biggest risk is we don't own student devices and therefore we cannot control the software and services available," said Dr. John Turnbull, head of networks for University of Birmingham Information Services. "Within the first few minutes of deploying Mirage we were able to inventory all wireless endpoints and identify both out-of-policy devices and unauthorized endpoint behavior. Gaining the ability to monitor and set thresholds against device compliance and behavior has enabled us to move forward with our long term wireless strategy without jeopardizing our enterprise security."

Mirage's NAC solution enables maximum network performance by controlling network access, isolating non-compliant and threatening endpoints, and providing self-remediation capabilities. Mirage's network-based solution is the easiest NAC solution to deploy, as it requires no agent software, deploys virtually inline, and works in any network environment.

"Working with Mirage, we were delighted to provide a proof of concept for the University of Birmingham that identified and analyzed their wireless security exposure," said Ashley Langley, managing director of Pervasive Networks, a UK Authorized Mirage ChannelFirst Partner. "Mirage provides an innovative approach to solving a complicated problem, enabling the University of Birmingham and many other organizations to gain control of the managed and unmanaged devices on their networks."

Mirage solutions are made available through Authorized ChannelFirst Partners and can also be delivered as a managed service.
